Niken Kousakusho Co., Ltd. / Major Dream Holder

➀Purpose

Chatter was occurring during end milling, which was compromising the quality of the finished surface.
As a result, we had no choice but to reduce the cutting parameters.
To resolve this issue, we were seeking ways to improve machining efficiency that met the following conditions.

  • We want to maintain the conditions recommended by the cutting tool manufacturer
  • We want to address this without modifying the program
  • We want to continue using our existing cutting tools as is

②Key Points for Implementation

To address this issue, we adopted the “Major Dream Holder” manufactured by Nikken Kousakusho, which features a built-in damping mechanism.

  • The damping mechanism absorbs vibrations during cutting, ensuring stable machining.
  • Nikken's proprietary bearings suppress runout during high-speed rotation.

③Examples

We performed machining on aluminum and evaluated the results.

  • Machine used: BT50 machining center
  • Tool used: 20 mm carbide end mill

Conventional Holder vs. Major Dream Holder (NBT50-MDSK20-105)

  • Conventional Holder: At a feed rate of F = 5,000, chattering occurred, resulting in a wavy pattern on the finished surface.
  • Major Dream Holder: Under the same conditions, chattering was suppressed, and an improvement in surface finish was confirmed.

④Results

  • Machining efficiency was improved simply by changing the holder, without altering the cutting tools, clamping method, or machine.
  • Even under machining conditions where the feed rate was increased from F = 2,000 to F = 5,000—more than double the original rate—no chatter occurred, and high-quality surface finish was maintained.
  • The vibration-damping effect and the chuck structure with minimal runout reduce initial micro-chipping at the cutting edge, thereby extending tool life.
